Fi Darby on where to eat, sleep and visit on Dartmoor
-
One of the best things about Dartmoor is its variety of routes. Whether you want to navigate across tussocky moorland, wander leafy lanes or climb a hill for a sea view, Dartmoor offers plenty of choice. Here are three between two and eight miles long.
BRAT TOR
A short, sharp hill climb and high moorland views. Park just behind the Dartmoor Inn pub near Lydford, cross the bubbling River Lyd then head up the hill to admire Widgery Cross.
SITTAFORD TORFor a rewarding day's walk, access it from Postbridge car park (take your map and compass). Head up the east side of the East Dart River until you reach the Grey Wethers stone circles then follow the wall up to Sittaford Tor. Walk on a bearing to Sandy Hole Pass then follow the river downstream to cross at the waterfall. Aim for the wall junction at Broad Down then take the path back down to Postbridge.
WRAY VALLEY TRAILThe waymarked Wray Valley Trail is open to walkers, horseriders and cyclists and follows, mostly, the disused Wray Valley Railway between Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead. Start at either end and allow time to enjoy a cuppa in pretty Lustleigh.
