TILING LIKE A PROFESSIONAL

Tiling is one of the most popular home improvement projects among South African homeowners.

TILING LIKE A PROFESSIONAL

Whether you are upgrading a bathroom, installing a kitchen splashback, or refreshing a patio, tiles offer durability, easy maintenance, and timeless style.

Yet tiling can also be intimidating for first-time DIY'ers. Crooked lines, uneven tiles, poor adhesion, and messy grout joints are common problems when the basics are overlooked.

The good news is that tiling like a professional is not about complicated techniques or expensive tools. It is about planning carefully, preparing the surface correctly, and working methodically. When these fundamentals are followed, even DIY enthusiasts can achieve impressive results.

imageThis guide covers practical steps to help you install both wall and floor tiles with confidence.

Planning the project

Professional tilers rarely start by opening a bag of adhesive. Instead, they begin by planning the layout.

Start by measuring the area that needs to be tiled. Record the length and width in millimetres and calculate the total square metres.

Always add an extra 10% for waste and cutting, especially if the layout involves corners or patterns.

Next, think about the tile layout.

Where the first tile is placed determines how the entire installation will look. Ideally, you want cut tiles to be placed at the edges of the room rather than in prominent areas.

For walls, professionals often begin from a centre line, ensuring that both sides of the wall have evenly sized cut tiles. For floors, starting from the centre of the room can create a balanced appearance.

A dry layout can be very helpful. Place a few rows of tiles on the floor without adhesive to see how the spacing works and where cuts will be required.

This simple step prevents awkward narrow tile pieces later.
