LOAD SHEDDING HOW TO RESPOND TO IT
The Home Handyman
|May/June 2026
There's a particular kind of silence that settles over a home when the power goes out.
-
It's not the peaceful kind, it's the abrupt hum of appliances dying, the WiFi blinking off mid-sentence, the kettle that never quite gets going. In South Africa, load shedding has turned that moment into a familiar interruption, woven into daily life whether we like it or not. But while we can't control the schedule, we can control how we respond to it.
For South Africans, surviving load shedding isn't about scrambling for candles every time the lights go out. It's about creating a system, a rhythm that makes those dark hours not just manageable, but surprisingly calm and even productive.
The first shift is mental. If you treat load shedding as a crisis every time, it will always feel like one. But if you plan for it the same way you would for a weekend braai or a rainy day indoors, it becomes something you work around rather than something that derails you. Start by learning your schedule. It sounds obvious, but knowing exactly when your power will go off, and for how long, allows you to structure your day more efficiently. Charging devices, cooking meals, running appliances - these all become deliberate actions instead of last-minute panics.Lighting is usually the first challenge people tackle, and often the first place they go wrong. Candles might feel nostalgic, but they're impractical and risky, especially in homes with children or pets. A better approach is layered lighting. Rechargeable LED lanterns, headlamps, and even simple battery-powered bulbs can transform the experience. Place them where you actually need them: the kitchen, the bathroom, near stairways. It's less about brightness and more about thoughtful positioning.
