Outdoor lighting at Christmas

When it comes to decorating your home outside for Christmas, the Brits have never really taken to it quite like those in the US have.

However, this changed a few years ago and we have the many lockdown Christmases to thank for it - the theory being that if people can’t celebrate indoors, we can still do it outside instead.

This has meant that the trend for exterior lights has been on the up ever since - not in a super-blingy-everything-covered-in-lights kind of way, though, we mean a gentler, twinkly, magical look, brightening the greyest day (or mood) and instantly lifting the entire street.

So whether you wish to dress your house in lights for Christmas, or even do it year-round, there are important things to consider before you do - the following expert tips will ensure a safe and beautiful display that will last for years to come.

1 INVEST IN QUALITY

Quality is the most important thing when buying exterior lights. They need to withstand the elements and be reused year after year. Look for lights with good reviews and that offer a guarantee. There are lots of reputable stockists online, including Amazon, Robert Dyas and B&Q, as well as dedicated outdoor light stockists, including Lights4Fun, Festive Lights and The Solar Centre.

2 MAKE SURE THE LIGHTS CAN BE USED OUTDOORS

Lights marked IP65 and above are the most reliably waterproof and are suitable for prolonged outdoor use, meaning you could keep your lights up all year round,' says Shane Mead, general manager of Festive Lights. 'Anything below IP44 is not suitable for year-round outdoor use. If in doubt, always ensure the plug is kept in a weatherproof connection box, such as a Dribox.'
