BASEMENT CONVERSIONS ADD A WHOLE HOUSE FOOTPRINT OF SPACE TO A HOME, BUT THE COST AND UPHEAVAL CAN BE DAUNTING. OUR GUIDE EXPLAINS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

BASEMENT CONVERSIONS

If you live in a house with an existing but underused subterranean space, a basement conversion could be key to extending your living space. However, unlike garage or loft conversions, converting a basement has a unique set of challenges that need to be overcome in order to ensure results that stand the test of time. For starters, you will need to waterproof the space and make sure there's adequate ventilation so it doesn't succumb to damp and mould. Then there's the issue of adding insulation so that your basement is warm and dry. And with basement conversion prices high, it's important you consider whether it's a financially worthwhile project. If you are looking to make a financial return on your project investment, you'll want the value you add to be more than the project cost. To help you decide if this is the right project for you, we've spoken to a group of experts in this type of conversion for their insight into how to successfully convert your basement.

imageQ.1 DO I NEED PLANNING PERMISSION?

A You can carry out internal conversion works to an existing subterranean space under permitted development. However, more extensive plans will almost certainly need planning permission. Steph Lyke, partner within the residential property team at SAS Daniels, explains: 'Planning permission will generally be required if you are creating new space, for example excavating below ground, altering the appearance externally or adding a lightwell or window.'
