Finding effective ways to stop overheating in our homes is becoming an essential part of house design in the UK as our climate changes and heatwaves become more frequent and intense. For homeowner Lorraine Dooley, this formed a key element of the design process when she commissioned Hadfield & Noblin Architects to transform a tired bungalow in Somerset into a forever home.

NEED FOR SOLAR PROTECTION

Lorraine and her family wanted the design of the house to take advantage of extensive views of the garden and the city of Bath by incorporating large southwest-facing windows. 'When the architects talked about integrating external blinds into the design for the lounge and living rooms and two bedrooms upstairs, we were initially sceptical,' admits Lorraine. 'However, they explained it was the best way to stop solar glare and would prevent the house overheating.'
