Create functional artwork that keeps your gear safe and your floors clear

- BY SAMUEL ROSENMAYER

Skateboard Wall Mount

Leaning your skateboard or longboard by the door might be convenient, but it's a recipe for scuffed walls, stubbed toes and cluttered floors.

This DIY wall mount solves all that—and you can knock it out in a weekend.

I designed this mount to hold two boards. If you only need space for one, simply shorten the wall mount boards and use two arm supports instead of four.

I also chose to splurge on rosewood for an inlay that adds a custom touch, but you can keep costs down by skipping the inlay and/ or using another sturdy wood, such as Baltic birch plywood, instead of cherry for the base.

image1 CUT THE ARM SUPPORTS

Sketch the arm support dimensions (see Figure B) on a 1×6 cherry board using a pencil and a Speed square, then use a miter saw to cut around the perimeter. Use the first arm support as a template for the remaining three.

2 CUT THE ARM SUPPORT SLOTS

Use a jigsaw to cut along the inside of the 7⁄8-in. slot in each of the arm supports. This will be a rough cut, so don’t worry if it isn’t perfect. Then, smooth out the slots on a router table fitted with a 3⁄4-in. straight router bit. Make slow passes to prevent burning the wood.
