July 2025

Are your plants feeling the heat? If so, there is a range of equipment available to keep them well-watered with options to suit your particular requirements. Here are a few we tried this month

WATERING WONDERS

SOLAR AUTOMATIC WATERING SYSTEM

This solar-powered automatic irrigation system will water up to 15 pots, greenhouse plants or hanging baskets and can also be used in raised beds. Attached to a water butt, it is capable of lifting water up to 2.5m (8ft) from the water source with a drip effect to reduce water wastage. Though driven by solar power there is a battery back-up, so irrigation continues even when there is no sun. There is up to 10m (32ft) of hose to utilise and it has is a water level sensor and built-in filter.

imageKG VERDICT

This is a very effective watering system, ensuring your plants are watered evenly with minimum wastage. It takes a little setting up, cutting the piping to the required lengths, but once in place it gives you plenty of flexibility. You will need a water butt or barrel to drop the water sensor and filter into and, provided you have that nearby, you can organise the piping layout for outdoor pots, greenhouse plants or even a raised bed. You can set watering for twice a day (dawn and dusk) for a duration from 30 seconds to 12 minutes - there are six settings in all. A good one if you are going on holiday or you are short of time.
