It's easy to envision your containers filled with color when you see the newest super-flowery annual geranium, heat-tolerant tuberous begonia, double mandevilla and many others on the following pages.
TRENDING PLANTS This year's crop of new introductions has lots of eye-catching blooms, from lush doubles to exceptional colors or patterns and fantastic foliage plants too. Many have multiseason appeal, so just one plant provides interest from spring to frost. If you're tired of the same old standbys, check out some improved classics to mix things up this year. And be sure to find out how to enter our drawing for new selections from our friends at Proven Winners and Southern Living Plant Collection.
'Dream Catcher' epimedium
Epimedium hybrid
The out-of-the-ordinary blooms of 'Dream Catcher' epimedium have a rose-red and yellow color combination that will add a spark to your shade garden. Its long-lasting flowers sit on tall stems above the mound of foliage so they're easy to see and enjoy near a shady path or patio. But this tough perennial isn't just a pretty face. Plants thrive even in dry shade without much work - just cut off dead foliage in late winter. In addition, deer and rabbits won't nibble the wiry stems and green leaves, which get a bronze flush in cool weather.
Perennial Best feature: Rosy-red sepals with large yellow wings in mid- to late spring Light: Part to full shade Size: 18 to 24 in. tall, 24 to 36 in. wide Cold hardy: USDA zones 5 to 8 Introducer: Walters Gardens Inc. Source: Local garden centers

Reader Tips - GREAT IDEAS FROM SMART GARDENERS
JoAnne found a simple way to keep delicate stems from flopping over: She cuts the bottom off a clear disposable plastic cup, then makes a slit up the side and slips it around the plant's stem. It's a great way to provide a house plant, newly planted perennial or new cutting extra support as it grows.

Light Up the Shade
This is the plant for you if you're looking for something unusual for your shade garden. Carolina pink is native to the southeastern United States, but it is becoming increasingly rare in the wild. Luckily, it's starting to take off as a garden plant, and a striking one at that.

Pretty Permaculture
After some home construction, Joseph and Shalyn Donofro’s zone 5 backyard was left with low-quality, compacted soil and not much of anything else. They envision a beautiful space that supports their young family’s healthy lifestyle goals, teaches responsibility to their children and enables them to spend quality time outdoors together. They want the cottage garden aesthetic, as well as the benefits of basic permaculture practices, which encourage sustainability and enrich the well-being of both the garden and the gardeners.
