Meat Processing Sector in India is a promising segment for the food processing industry, owing to its diversity. India is the world's major producer of beef, mutton, and poultry.

The country's food processing industries are aiding in value addition to these products. It manufactures frozen meat, meat products, and poultry products by processing and preserving. According to Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS), 2024, the country produced 10.25 million tonnes in FY 2023-2024. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, India is the 5th largest producer of meat globally. The government schemes and initiatives have boosted the sector's prospects.
The State of the Meat Processing Sector in India
According to the latest BAHS, India's meat production capacity increased by 4.95% as compared to the previous year. The top meat-producing states in India are West Bengal (12.62%), Uttar Pradesh (12.29%), Maharashtra (11.28%), Telangana (10.85%), and Andhra Pradesh (10.41%). These five states account for more than 57.45% of total meat production in the country.
Meat Processing Sector in India: Government's Scheme and Initiatives
Currently, India is the largest producer of Buffalo meat and second-largest producer of goat meat. The government's push for infrastructure development in this sector has provided a thrust to the meat processors.
Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI)
The scheme is an umbrella scheme for all food processing industries in India. For the meat processing sector, the scheme aids in the development of meat processing, cold storage, chilling lines, and other infrastructure creation.
