'Clairette is the brother of Grenache, and the perfect variety for revealing terroir here'

It comes into flower at February's end each year, our mimosa. The little tree explodes as thousands of tiny lemon-yellow pincushions cluster its spindly branches.

'Clairette is the brother of Grenache, and the perfect variety for revealing terroir here'

We walk out on cool mornings into a mist of hauntingly sweet, powdery scents. Our almond tree flowers even earlier, though less prolifically; it has a similar though subtler fragrance. Then there's the scent of toasted almonds themselves, and honey, too – and perhaps the two compounded... in nougat. Could we add hawthorn? Honeysuckle, maybe, and linden? Welcome to scent heaven. Now: find me a white wine that smells like that.

Guess what? There is one. These are all scents you might hope to chance on in a glass of fresh young white made from the Clairette grape variety. They were also some of the allusions that I jotted down in March as I blind-tasted through a range of wines from the new Gigondas Blanc appellation, appearing on labels from the 2023 vintage. This can be (and often is) pure Clairette, and must be at least 70% Clairette; balancing varieties include Clairette Rose, Grenache Blanc and Gris, Marsanne and Roussanne, Piquepoul Blanc and Bourboulenc (plus no more than 5% Viognier and Ugni Blanc).

Why food & wine pairing is a load of bunk

Thinking about, talking about, writing about, and - God help us - actually attempting food and wine pairing is the single greatest waste of time and energy in the entire world of wine.

The next Great White Grape?

Albariño. It's easy to grow and full of racy acidity, and there's a lot of love for it among consumers. It's no wonder this Galician super-grape is making converts of winemakers the world over

'We need to change the wine-collecting rhetoric'

My first en primeur purchase was deeply uncool; from a terrible Bordeaux vintage (1997) and an unfashionable appellation (Canon-Fronsac) it was the best I could afford, but I still remember the thrill of my first investment in my future drinking.

'Among wine lovers the goal should be simply appreciation'

So Decanter is 50. Early summer 1975, west London: the first issue of Decanter is taking shape, all scissors and the smell of Cow gum. The concept is new; a colourful consumer magazine for people serious about their wine but not claiming to be experts. I'm drafting an article (sadly I've lost it) intended to entertain first and enlighten second. And just down the road more scissors and Cow gum are putting together another new magazine: The Garden.
