Contrary to popular belief, fake Nigerian princes aren't the biggest threat to your money—your own family is. Exhibit A: the saga of Susan Kraus.
On March 13, 2024, Leslie Clayton’s cellphone rang. The caller was Inspir, a luxury senior living facility on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Clayton's 84-year-old mother, Susan Kraus, had been living in the facility for the better part of two years. Inspir promised to “meet the needs of today’s most discerning seniors,” delivering “urban senior living on a luxury level.” This included penthouses and restaurants adorned in custom millwork and Calacatta marble, a pool and fitness center, a “SkyPark” with unobstructed views of the East River, and tailored healthcare amenities. Kraus paid $20,000 per month to live there.
Kraus’s nest egg came not from an old-money inheritance but through Manhattan’s breakneck real estate market. Her husband, who died in 2017, purchased a townhouse on East 80th Street in the 1970s for $172,000. In 2019 Kraus sold it for $8.975 million, which is how she was able to afford to live at Inspir. Despite the high price tag, Kraus had enough money to not only live out the rest of her life in comfort but to pass down a hefty inheritance to her three adult children, including Clayton.
So it was strange that Inspir was calling Clayton to tell her that Kraus’s rent hadn’t been paid in two months. While Clayton oversaw her mother’s daily needs, including healthcare decisions related to Kraus’s progressive dementia, it was Clayton’s brother, former Wall Street executive Brett Thomas Graham, who oversaw their mother’s finances and was responsible for making sure her bills were paid. Clayton spoke with Graham, who assured his sister that it was a mistake and he'd take care of it. Clayton checked in with Inspir a few days later, and the bill still hadn’t been paid. She tried to contact her brother again, but he ignored her calls. A knot began to form in the pit of Clayton’s stomach. She immediately flew from her home in California to New York City to figure out what was going on.
