Everything you need to know about the buzzwords in skin rejuvenation
When it comes to skincare, aesthetic treatments often inspire what we find on our vanity tables. And when it comes to skin rejuvenation these days, two buzzwords have gained immense popularity amongst beauty enthusiasts: Exosomes and PDRN (also known as polydeoxyribonucleotide).
What are the benefits of incorporating these active ingredients into our beauty routine, be it in aesthetic treatments or skincare?
PDRN VS EXOSOMES: SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES
Let's do a deep dive into what these actives are and how they work.
According to Dr Angeline Yong, dermatologist and medical director, Angeline Yong Dermatology, PDRN and exosomes are commonly used in aesthetic procedures for skin rejuvenation. Both have “regenerative properties that can help improve skin texture, elasticity and overall appearance”.
In addition, they also have the ability to stimulate collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin firmness and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Furthermore, exosomes and PDRN have anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce skin inflammation and promote skin healing. And this can be beneficial for those suffering from skin conditions such as acne, rosacea and other inflammatory skin disorders.
This is where the similarities end.
PDRN and PN (polynucleotides, often used in aesthetic procedures) are derived from salmon or trout DNA, and are particularly useful in wound healing and protecting the skin against free radical damage. These polymers, composed of DNA building blocks, aid in stimulating fibroblast activity — the cells responsible for collagen and elastin, to enhance skin regeneration, Dr Yong adds.
