Are retailers ready to meet the personalization demand?

June - July 2025

A generational shift is markedly visible when it comes to shopping for bridal jewellery - today's brides are asserting their individuality, and clamouring for unique, customized pieces. Suneeta Kaul endeavours to find out what this phenomenon involves, and whether retailers are equipped to meet this evolving demand.

Are retailers ready to meet the personalization demand?

Buying bridal jewellery is no longer about going to a retail outlet, making a choice, and filling the trousseau. Today's brides are not content with what they see in retail outlets; they do not want what everyone else is wearing. They want bridal jewellery that tells their story, and bears the stamp of their personality. They are products of their generation, greatly influenced by global fashion, Instagram trends, Pinterest boards, and bespoke couture. So, they want things their way, and that includes their wedding jewellery.

CUSTOMIZATION AND PERSONALIZATION AT AN INFLECTION POINT

Brides are now walking into stores not just to shop, but to co-create -- from monogrammed mangalsutras, to heirloom redesigns and concept-based bridal sets, customization is no longer a luxury — it is the expectation.

Says Samarth Jaiswal, Omara Fine Jewellery, Chandigarh, “Today’s bride wants her bridal trousseau, especially her jewels, to be a unique reflection of her identity, what she stands for, and what her marriage means to her. This sentiment means that when brides decide the jewels for their wedding, bespoke one-off pieces designed and crafted especially for them, taking into consideration their aesthetics and emotions, take precedence over off-the-shelf pieces.”

The trend of personalization and customization has now reached an inflection point in many parts of the country. Explains Pavan Mor, Pavan Mor Jewellers, Hyderabad, “Over the past few years, we have seen a clear shift — brides no longer want just what retailers have in stock. Customization has become a strong preference, especially for bridal jewellery, where every element is deeply personal and symbolic. Whether it is reimagining heirloom pieces, or designing something entirely new, customization is now almost an expectation, not an exception.”
