The rise in the number of multi-hyphenates points to a larger cultural shift, where careers and identity are more fluid than ever before. It’s a new way to achieve personal and professional fulfilment, and these multifaceted professionals are wearing their many hats and hyphens with ease and pride.

On Being a Multi-Hyphenate

I've always found it hard to stick to one thing in life, to stay in my lane. In our parents’ generation, perhaps, but life today is far too rich and varied to not wander down every fascinating path we're fortunate enough to be presented with. My perspectives on being multifarious had shifted early on in my career, when I met a senior colleague in the Singapore Government. After recovering from a life-threatening cancer discovered during a highly successful posting in Europe, he'd dug deep into his lifelong passion for antique Peranakan porcelains; he is, today, one of the foremost experts in the region on these prized handcrafted treasures. Nobody, he'd once told me, is born a two-dimensional baby.
