THE Scent KEEPERS
Elle India
|June 2025
Krishika Bhatia explores the shift towards emotionally resonant perfumes & dives deep into their role as potent carriers of memory & identity
-
Perfume is an enigma: invisible, intangible, yet deeply visceral. It clings to our skin, our clothes, our hair, trailing behind us like an olfactory fingerprint, impossible to replicate entirely. Unlike clothing or a piece of jewellery, it cannot be seen, yet its presence is often more impactful than any physical adornment. It is this paradox that makes perfume an intimate extension of the self that operates on the threshold between the conscious and the subconscious.
In many instances, fragrance functions as an emotional time capsule. A certain note, be it the creamy sweetness of vanilla or the sharp, green bite of galbanum, can collapse years, transporting us back to moments of love, loss, or longing. This temporal elasticity makes scent a potent conduit of memory.
In India, where tradition and ritual entwine with everyday life, perfume occupies a unique space. It's sacred and sensual, a signifier of status and an expression of personal desire. As modern Indian consumers evolve, so does their relationship with scent. Where once a single bottle of Chanel N°5 or an attar of rose may have sufficed for every occasion, today's fragrance aficionados are assembling fragrance wardrobes with the same meticulous care once reserved for jewellery. This shift reflects a broader cultural moment: a move towards emotional curation, where beauty goes beyond what meets the eye.
