Countless films and TV series have centred on the experiences of prison inmates behind bars. But the compelling new drama Waiting for the Out, based on Andy West's acclaimed memoir, also reflects on the challenges faced by friends and family in the outside world.

The six-parter stars Josh Finan (The Responder) as Dan, a young academic whose family life has been blighted by crime and jail time.

'Dan was brought up in a family where the male figures - his dad, uncle and brother - have been incarcerated at various points as he was growing up. But crucially, he didn't go down that route,' says Finan.
