For 23 days in October 2002, the Washington DC area of America was terrorised by a serial sniper who killed 10 people and left three others critically injured - all seemingly at random.

"The victims were all strangers to each other,' says retired Maryland Lt David Reichenbaugh, who worked on the case. "There was no rhyme nor reason to it. We were chasing ghosts.' But as Discovery+ documentary Hunted by My Husband: The Untold Story of the DC Sniper reveals, the killer had one very specific target - his former wife, the mother of his three children.

Watching news reports of the killings, Mildred Muhammad was unaware that the man behind them was her ex-husband John Allen Muhammad, a former Army marksman and someone she feared. She had divorced John after 12 years in a marriage that had become abusive. He had gaslit her, kept her short of money and battled over their children.

'He was full of rage. I was terrified, says Mildred. 'He told me, "You have become my enemy, and as my enemy, I will kill you." Investigators finally got their big break when an old Army friend of John's suggested he might be responsible for the murders and revealed he went around with a teenage sniper called Lee Boyd Malvo.
