To get that thrill, the star tries the risky sports of wingsuiting, freediving and rock climbing. “A big part of doing all of this is so I can be on that edge…but safely.”

Saying “phew” to that is his wife, singer Katy Perry, who shares a toddler daughter, Daisy Dove, with Bloom. Perry’s presence in the series makes it all feel much more personal than that other series about celebrities cheating death, Running Wild With Bear Grylls. Their conversations are emotionally raw and philosophical; she reminds him to chant, a practice in their shared Buddhist faith that keeps one in the moment. Perry’s also got a sense of humor, saying, “[Is this] the daily ‘I’m alive’ call?”
