M&K Sound V12

M&K SOUND'S V12 is, as the name might suggest, a subwoofer with a 12in driver. At the time I bought it, the company's range of bassmakers was fairly simple, with the larger X Series using a push-pull driver configuration, and the V Series taking a simpler and more compact approach. The largest driver used by both series was 12in, so for reasons of budget and space I chose the V12.

Since then, M&K Sound has added the X+ and V+ Series to its lineup, which not only increase the output but now go up to 15 inches in woofer size and offer control via remote app. In the case of the V+ Series there's also an additional benefit: they're more compact compared to the previous generation. So, after three years do I remain happy with the V12 and, given the expanded choice, would I still buy one?

What's good about it?

The answer to my first question is a resounding yes.I employ a pair of V12s at the front of my room, and I'm delighted with their overall performance. These subs are capable of some enjoyably deep bass considering their relatively simple spec, and the amplifiers produce enough responsive power to ensure the low-frequency depth has a degree of weight and snarl behind it.

The V12 claims a frequency response of 20Hz-200Hz, and based on measurements taken by my Trinnov Altitude16 AV processor, those numbers aren't exaggerated. The Class D amp stage is rated at 300W RMS with 500W peaks, which also seems honest based on my first-hand experience of some terrifying lows. The frequency response and power are also sufficient for the V12 to be THX certified.

The V Series models leverage some of the thinking behind M&K Sound's higher-spec X Series, but are more deliberately designed to not dominate your living space.
