It's been over 30 years since legendary games designer Sid Meier crafted the first Civilization game. One of the most influential titles of all time, it founded its own genre, the 4X game; eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate. Now in its seventh iteration, Civilization has grown enormously, but those four challenges form the heart of the game.
You explore your surroundings, founding a settlement and sending out scouts; expand your capital by growing your population, spreading your buildings and using settlers to found other towns; exploit nearby resources to feed your population, build, train new military units and fuel technological and cultural research; and exterminate your rivals, keeping your own settlements safe and destroying or taking over those of your enemies.
For such a complicated game, Civilization VII is quite easy to get into. There's a tutorial available, including advisors to guide you. This works well in the early parts of the game, but a little more intervention would be welcome later on, when you're indulging in diplomacy and establishing trade routes. If you're new to Civilization, you'll likely be a good few hours into your first game before its mechanics and rules become clear. Take a tip: YouTube videos, especially those on the official Sid Meier's Civilization VII channel, are a real boon.
