The Trouble with Taste
Champak
|June Second 2025
In Owl Champakam Colony, it was the birthday of everyone’s favourite—Owl Prince—and it was celebrated with great pomp this year.
Streamers and colourful bulbs were hung in every direction. The entire colony was decked up, as if waiting for a special moment. The Owl Prince sat on stage in a truly royal manner, and seated beside him was his advisor, the clever and quick-witted Chanchal Owl.
The Prince had a special fondness for food, so this year he organised a grand feast for his birthday. Gifts arrived from far and wide—golden feathers, pearl garlands, eucalyptus twigs. However, with each gift, the Prince’s face grew a little longer.
“Hmmm...everything is wonderful,” said the Prince, “but no one seems to know that flavour lives in my heart! Someone should have brought a gift that could stun my tongue!”
“Your taste has always been unique, Your Highness,” Chanchal said, smiling.
Just then, her eyes landed on an old-looking packet tucked away among the other gifts. She was about to discard it when the Prince stopped her.
“Hey, Chanchal! What are you doing? Show me that!”
When the Prince opened the packet, an old book emerged, featuring writing in golden letters: ‘The Jungle Masterchef: The Unique World of Flavour.’ The Prince’s eyes lit up.
“Wow! This looks like a book that will give wings to my passion for flavour!” he chirped with delight.
The very next day, the Owl Prince put on a white apron.
“Chanchal! Gather all the ingredients. I shall make ‘Banana Kheer Sizzler’ by myself!” he commanded.
Who knows what’s going to happen now? Chanchal thought.
Chanchal’s team included Chatpat Owl, Foodie Owl and Lazy Owl. After hours of running around, they gathered 61 items.
Finally, when the ‘Banana Kheer Sizzler’ was ready, the Prince garnished it with radish leaves and sesame chutney and served it.
Chanchal tasted a spoonful and turned her face away.
“Wow, Your Highness! I’ve never tasted anything like this before...and maybe never will again,” said Chanchal.
