Freedom from Superstition

Daisy cat lived in a small house with her two daughters who were extremely smart. Riri was orange in colour and had golden-yellow eyes. Berry was black in colour, with brown eyes. Daisy loved them both. She would play with her children daily, and go for walks. At dinner, Daisy would bring fish and sometimes rats for them, and sometimes they enjoyed milk.
One day, Daisy told her kids, who had grown bigger, "Tomorrow, you must go out alone and hunt for food. This way, you will also see the outside world."
The next morning, Berry and Riri took their first steps to find food. Berry started crossing the road. At the same time, she saw two women going to the market. Berry had crossed their paths. Both women got very angry at Berry, and one said, "This cat has crossed our path. Now our work will not happen."
Further ahead, a child was walking with her father to the school, to take an exam. Berry was about to cross their path, when her father said, "Walk fast! If this cat crosses our path, your paper will go not well. Chase her away from here." The child threw a stone at Berry and chased it away. Berry was hurt and wondered, "Why are people talking so meanly about me?" Walking ahead, a small child gave her some milk. Berry felt better. Later, she caught a rat, and holding it between her teeth, Berry walked home.
On her way home she saw two friends who were going to watch a movie.

The Park Came Alive
The Koi fish living in Sangam Pond of Munia Park had lately become very sad. No one came near their pond anymore, while earlier, the place used to be full of morning walkers. In the evenings, women and children would gather there. The park always remained lively with people’s chatter and laughter.

GRAVE MISTAKES
“Here’s your new school,” Dad said as he pulled over at the gate of Silver Pines School. Courtesy of his dad’s frequent job transfers, Omi is always the new student. This was his fourth school in the last eight years. Standing at the gates of his new school, clutching his bag, he tried not to look nervous. His family had just moved to the town a week ago, and everything still smelled new—new books, new uniform, new trouble.
