There was barely space to move as Lady Gaga took to the stage before a record-breaking crowd of 2.5 million in Rio de Janeiro. The jubilant scenes of fans singing and dancing offered no hint of the danger that was narrowly avoided.

Brazilian police revealed after the concert that they had thwarted a bomb attack planned for the spectacle on Copacabana beach in Rio on May 3. Two people who were planning to detonate explosives at the free event were arrested as part of Operation Fake Monster. Authorities believed the suspects sought to target Brazil’s LGBTQIA+ community.
