From British royalty to Hollywood royalty, a fashion trend is emerging: everything old is new again, particularly when it comes to Mom’s valuable vintage wardrobe.

Actress Brooke Shields was a “proud mama” when her daughter Rowan chose to wear one of her old gowns to prom. “I thought it was a special night when I was nominated for a Golden Globe and wore this dress in 1998,” she said. “But nothing could have prepared me to see my daughter wearing it to her prom.”

With upcycling on the rise and fast fashion on the decline, these stylish trendsetters show us that an outfit can look just as glamorous the second time around.

Maleficent actress Angelina Jolie suggests “enjoying your vintage pieces if you have them.” Many second-generation fashionistas are doing just that: taking advantage of their moms’ overflowing closets.

Pretty in pink! The Princess of Wales and her mother both look confident in this bubble-gum-hued ME+EM dress. While Carole, 69, wore hers to Royal Ascot in 2022, Kate, 42 (pictured at last year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show), originally donned the garment in 2021 to meet with young cancer patient Mila Sneddon, who had mentioned ahead of time that pink was her favourite colour. As for the royal blue dress by retail label Reiss, Carole wore it first – to Ascot in 2010 (top). Kate followed suit on a royal engagement in 2012 (right).
