Surrounded by flag-waving wellwishers, the Prince of Wales posed for selfies, accepted flowers and gave a health update on his wife the Princess on a visit to Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Royal fans turned out in droves to catch a glimpse of the future King, who has returned to royal duties while Kate continues to undergo cancer treatment, and were rewarded with an impromptu walkabout following an official engagement in the city.

Among them was 60-year-old Julie Cain, who asked: “Do you mind if I ask how your wife and children are?”

“All doing well, thank you,” replied the Prince, who had celebrated his 13th wedding anniversary the day before. “Yes, we’re doing well.”

William also met three-year-old Kevin, who had an imaginative way to capture the royal’s attention – by saying it was his birthday – and was delighted when the Prince bent down to shake his hand and ask if he’d eaten any cake.
