Scientists and animal lovers have been horrified by the sea mammals’ seemingly senseless surfside slaughter for nearly a decade.

“It was so gruesome,” recalls Sarah Grimes of the Noyo Center for Marine Science in Mendocino County. “I was like marine mammal CSI, seeing all the dead pups with their heads torn off, and I’m like, ‘What the heck did that?’ ”

Grimes and others feared that barbaric humans were decapitating the cute creatures.
