Klipspringer: Lowveld

Nestled in the beautiful Lowveld scenery of Limpopo, Klipspringer reflects a vision of sustainable living, where modern architecture blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings.

Situated within the Wild Rivers Private Nature Reserve, the residence occupies a stunning location where the Olifants and Blyde rivers meet, perched on rugged terrain that offers expansive views of canyons and mountains.

Built with eco-conscious principles, this home exemplifies a harmonious balance between functionality, aesthetics, and environmental stewardship, demonstrating how architecture can respect and enhance its surroundings rather than dominate them.

The project was conceived and realised by the award-winning Eco Design Architects, led by Andy Horn, who has been at the forefront of sustainable building practices in South Africa since 1998.

Through innovative design techniques, Horn has crafted a structure that organically rises from the earth, combining local soils, stone, and a touch of cow dung to build rammed earth walls that endure the intense sun and seasonal rains of the Lowveld.

These walls not only offer structural strength but also naturally regulate the internal climate, storing heat and slowly releasing it to maintain comfort without relying on conventional air-conditioning systems.

The rammed-earth walls were built by JNA Group's engineering team and assembled by Assegai Projects. The Timber Division of JNA Group was responsible for the timber structures, designing and constructing the exposed timber roof.

Boron-treated eucalyptus posts and trusses make up the framework of the roof, supporting the pole rafters while ensuring durability and visual appeal.

The use of local, regenerative materials throughout the house demonstrates a deliberate move away from cement and steel, favouring earthy elements that support cyclical, nurturing processes.

This approach helps the building blend with its environment, lowering its ecological impact while providing warmth and shelter. Klipspringer’s design is closely aligned with its natural surroundings.
