Charting a new trajectory of growth under Yogi Adityanath

- BY SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

WESTERN UTTAR PRADESH

Uttar Pradesh is no longer a BIMARU state. It is now the second largest state in terms of economy... Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the growth engine of India for the development of thxe country and realising the vision of a Viksit Bharat."

A metamorphosis is underway in Western Uttar Pradesh under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Through strategic infrastructure development, an industrial renaissance and a renewed focus on social welfare, the region is shedding its past baggage to emerge as a key engine for India's economic ambitions.

For 19-year-old college student Saumya Gupta in Ghaziabad, the change is personal and tangible. Her commute to campus, once a time-consuming ordeal on congested roads, has been cut in half. "What used to take over an hour, now takes 35 minutes," she says, attributing the improvement to new flyovers and elevated roads. Like Saumya, her region is moving faster and better these days.

Traditionally rooted in agriculture, Western UP is being reimagined into a "growth gateway". The CM has consistently championed a "double-engine government" narrative, crediting the synergy between the state and central governments as a catalyst for unprecedented progress. His vision is moulding the region into a dynamic economic powerhouse through targeted interventions.

As the CM recently stated: "UP is no longer a BIMARU state. It is now the second largest state in terms of economy. UP has emerged as the growth engine of India for the development of the country and realising the vision of a Viksit Bharat." The transformation of its western districts stands as a testament to this claim.

Prioritising Rare Earths

Last year, the world received a powerful reminder of how fragile global supply chains can be. When China tightened export restrictions on rare earth elements, the shockwaves hit EVs, defence and renewable energy instantly. It reinforced a new geopolitical reality: the future will be shaped not just by capital, but by access to critical minerals and the ability to build resilient value chains around them.

Difficult but Doable

India's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 will entail a long-term fundamental transformation of the entire economy. This transition can strengthen growth rather than constrain it. The nearer milestones of 2030 are ambitious and challenging. The headline number is the creation of 500GW of fossil-fuel-free capacity. On this we are on track.
