Chevron Angola Fire Tragedy Exposes Deepening Safety Crisis Amid Layoffs and Near-Miss Spike

A deadly fire aboard Chevron's Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco (BBLT) oil platform off the coast of Angola has cast a harsh spotlight on growing safety lapses at one of the world's most prominent energy giants.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of May 20, claimed three lives and injured 17 others - four seriously underscoring escalating concerns over operational safety within the company's global operations.

The tragedy unfolded just weeks after Chevron CEO Mike Wirth issued a stark internal warning about a "concerning increase" in serious near-miss incidents.

In an April 29 internal video message titled "Do it safely or not at all," Wirth emphasized that some of these events "could have resulted in fatalities," urging employees to speak up about safety risks despite internal upheaval and cost-cutting measures.

Chevron, which announced plans earlier this year to cut up to 20% of its workforce amid declining oil prices, has been navigating a volatile operational environment.

However, the Angola platform fire raises troubling questions about whether these internal changes are compromising frontline safety standards.
