Angola's Natural Gas Prospects: Current Landscape and Future Outlook

Offshore Africa

|

March 2025

Angola, a major oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa, is increasingly focusing on its natural gas sector as part of a broader strategy to diversify its hydrocarbon economy.

Angola's Natural Gas Prospects: Current Landscape and Future Outlook

With an estimated 4.6 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of proved natural gas reserves as of early 2025, the country has significant potential to expand its gas production and reduce wasteful flaring practices.

However, infrastructure limitations and reliance on associated gas from oil fields continue to pose challenges.

Current State of Angola's Natural Gas Industry

Angola's natural gas production is primarily associated gas extracted alongside crude oil from offshore fields. The country has historically produced small quantities of marketed natural gas, with much of it either flared or reinjected into oil reservoirs to enhance crude oil recovery. Between 2014 and 2023, Angola's dry natural gas production averaged approximately 166 billion cubic feet (Bcf) annually, while domestic consumption remained low, averaging only 36 Bcf per year.
