Precision machining and cutting tool advancements are propelling aerospace manufacturing toward greater efficiency and innovation.
The aerospace and defence industry relies on precision, reliability, and efficiency - driven by cutting tool advancements. With the global cutting tools market set to reach $101.48 billion by 2027 and India's aerospace sector expected to nearly double by 2032, innovation in high-performance cutting solutions is crucial for enhanced production, safety, and sustainability.
Machining advanced materials
Cutting tools for aerospace materials must withstand extreme heat, high cutting forces, and rapid tool wear, says Vaibhav Shah, CEO / Chief of Marketing and Global Business, Cosmos Group of Companies. He suggests the solutions or methods that can be used to manage the above issues as:
• Heat resistance: Coatings like TiAlN and AlTiN enhance heat resistance, while highpressure coolants aid in heat dissipation and chip evacuation, preventing thermal damage.
• Tool material and geometry: Advanced carbide and ceramic tools with specialised geometries reduce cutting forces and improve chip evacuation, extending tool life.
• Optimised machining parameters: Balancing feed rate and RPM minimises work hardening and prevents fibre damage in tough alloys like titanium and Inconel.
• Composite machining: PCD (Polycrystalline Diamond) tools prevent delamination and ensure precision in lightweight aerospace structures.
Aerospace manufacturing faces challenges with advanced materials like titanium, Inconel, and composites, which cause rapid tool wear and affect surface finish, says L Krishnan, Managing Director, TaeguTec India. To address this, TaeguTec offers SFeedTec high-feed milling cutters for superior chip control and wear resistance in titanium, WinSFeed tools with optimised geometries and coatings for efficient roughing and finishing of Inconel and superalloys, and TC430 ceramic grades designed for high-speed turning, boosting productivity and surface quality.
