SANDISK'S INNOVATION CULTURE IS MAKING AI MORE COST AND ENERGY EFFICIENT

AS AI MODELS BECOME BIGGER AND MORE SOPHISTICATED, THEY require more and more memory to store ever-growing amounts of data.

While the technology that has traditionally been used for AI data storage-called dynamic random access memory (DRAM) has long advanced computing performance, today's AI models are growing so rapidly that memory is reaching what's called the "memory wall"-a gap between processing power and the capacity required to feed it.

Earlier this year, Sandisk, a California-based tech company that designs and manufactures flash memory products, unveiled a solution: High Bandwidth Flash (HBF). HBF's innovation is to stack flash memory in a completely new way, delivering significantly greater capacity than traditional High Bandwidth Memory and potentially enabling wide-scale AI usage at less cost and energy expenditure. "It's a very different technology that is redefining what's possible," says Alper Ilkbahar, Sandisk's executive vice president and CTO.
