Tsitsikamma farmer support to boost food security

Eastern Cape MEC for Agriculture Nonceba Kontsiwe recently visited the Tsitsikamma community to hand over critical farming supplies as part of the department's ongoing drive to improve food security and support emerging farmers.

Speaking to Farmer's Weekly, Kontsiwe said the supplies, which included fertiliser, gardening tools, seedlings, seeds, and animal feed, were aimed at helping the communal farmers cultivate their land and expand livestock production.
She added that the intervention formed part of the department's broader strategy to accelerate service delivery in rural areas and strengthen local food systems. It was delivered under the Ilima Lokulima Community Food Production Scheme, a long-term initiative that will run from 2025 to 2030.
"Food prices continue to increase, and consumers might not be able to keep up with inflation.
