These plants are highly suitable for container gardening on patios. Chrysanthemums produce flowers in a wide variety of colours. They are used as cut flowers for special occasions and for pot plants.

Chrysanthemums were first cultivated in China as flowering herbs as far back as the 15th century BCE. More than 500 cultivars had been recorded by 1630. It is estimated that there are currently more than 20 000 cultivars, of which about 7 000 are in China.
Modern cultivated chrysanthemums are flowering plants of the genus Chrysanthemum in the family Asteraceae. They are showier than their wild relatives, and the flower heads occur in various forms: they can be daisy-like or decorative, like buttons. In addition to the traditional yellow, they are available in white, purple, red and other colours.
