Bumper maize and soya bean harvest offers relief

South Africa's maize and soya bean farmers should expect lower prices in the medium term as commodity prices are expected to soften.
Favourable weather conditions and strong demand prospects are however, expected to cushion the impact, according to Absa's AgriTrends Spring edition.
The 2024/25 production season brought a notable rebound in maize output. Favourable weather conditions lifted white maize production by 27% and yellow maize by 7% compared with the previous season, pushing South Africa's total crop above 15 million tons. This meant South Africa would exceed domestic demand.
Despite the larger harvest, prices on the South African Futures Exchange (SAFEX) have not fallen back to export parity levels.
Going forward, maize prices are expected to decline. Absa forecasted that yellow maize will decline from R4 223/t in 2025 to R3 540/t in 2026, before easing further to R3 435/t in 2027 and R3 396/t in 2028.
