FUTURE FORWARD FASHION Inside India's Evolving Womenswear Narrative
Business Of Fashion
|June 2025
Women are leading multifaceted lives and so prefer clothing that transitions effortlessly across occasions. Womenswear has thus evolved into not only the largest segment in India's apparel industry but also the most dynamic and diverse.

India’s womenswear industry stands at a pivotal juncture, propelled by tradition yet transformed by modernity. While deeply rooted in cultural expressions such as sarees and salwar kameez, the segment is witnessing unprecedented shifts in consumer behavior, category dynamics, and fashion sensibilities. From regional textiles to western silhouettes, womenswear is not only the largest segment in India's apparel industry but also the most dynamic and diverse.
Market Outlook & Growth Trajectory
According to Technopak, the Indian womenswear market is expected to grow from ₹2,98,216 crore in FY2025 to an impressive ₹8,14,679 crore by FY2032. Complementing this, MMR forecasts a steady CAGR of 5% from 2024 to 2030, estimating the segment to touch nearly ₹1,66,728 crore by 2030. While these headline numbers project robust expansion, the nuances lie in category-level trajectories.
Activewear, denim, and fusion wear are anticipated to lead in terms of growth, while traditional categories like sarees and salwar kameez may see slower momentum or marginal decline in market share. The key takeaway is that while tradition continues to hold ground, modernity is defining the pace.
