The Permanent STORM
BW Businessworld
|May 02, 2026
In a strife-torn world grappling with macro-economic challenges, some global businesses have learnt to stop waiting for the calm to return and build resilience against the chaos.

BY 2026, the boardroom acquired a new vocabulary. Executives who once spoke of supply chain “optimisation” now speak of “rewiring.” Those who hired economists now hire geopolitical analysts. And CEOs who a decade ago could treat a war in Eastern Europe or a tariff battle between superpowers as somebody else's problem, have discovered there is no somebody else's problem anymore. Everything connects. Everything shocks.
The cascade seemingly began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, in the post-Covid world. Energy prices spiked. Grain markets buckled. But the deeper damage was psychological: the assumption, long baked into the operating models of multinationals, that the world's major trading corridors were fundamentally stable — began to crack. The Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping followed, forcing vessels into weeks-long diversions around the Cape of Good Hope. That was compounded by sweeping tariffs imposed by the United States in 2025 and by the rapid advance of AI, which scrambled labour markets, competitive moats, and entire business models at once. Most recently, the Iran conflict has rattled the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint for roughly a fifth of global oil and LNG flows.
The companies that have survived this era did not do so by predicting the next crisis. Nobody predicted this particular sequence. They survived, and in several remarkable cases, thrived, by abandoning the idea that prediction is the goal at all.
The Hardware of Resilience
No company better embodies the physical restructuring underway than Apple. For two decades, the world's most valuable company built its manufacturing empire in China, extraordinarily efficient but extremely concentrated. Tim Cook saw earlier than most that concentration was becoming a liability. On Apple's Q2 2025 earnings call, Cook confirmed the pivot.
