INSIDE INDIA'S RENEWABLE RUNWAY: What 2025 Set in Motion for 2026

Globally, 2025 marked a clear inflection point for the energy transition, as clean energy moved decisively from ambition to execution and began to be measured not by intent but by its ability to scale, integrate with grids, and deliver power reliably at peak demand.

In this context, India emerged as one of the strongest proof points. If there is one thing 2025 made unmistakable, it is that India's renewable transition has crossed the point of speculation and entered real-time delivery. By early March, the country had already surpassed 220 GW of renewable capacity, and by September crossed 500 GW of total installed power capacity, with clean energy accounting for more than half of the mix and increasingly meeting more than half of peak demand on several days.

At the heart of this momentum was solar, the system's workhorse, which pushed India past 120 GW of cumulative capacity, contributing over 18 GW of the 22 GW of renewables added in just the first six months of the year. This pace did not emerge by accident; it reflected the convergence of policy clarity, transmission readiness, domestic manufacturing, and on-ground execution. For Indian manufacturers, 2025 redefined scale from capacity announcements to consistency, quality, and supply-chain resilience.

At Waaree, this shift reinforced a long-held conviction that India's clean energy leadership will be built by companies that combine manufacturing depth with technology adoption and execution discipline, positioning both the country and its champions to shape the global energy transition as 2026 unfolds.

Leadership Readiness Challenge

As 2026 begins, one message is clear for human resource leaders across India: the era of incremental change is over. The year began with aggressive predictions—AI-led acceleration, record hiring, new industry clusters, and a re-imagined workforce. Yet what emerged was hesitation, second-guessing, and a palpable fear of misstepping in a market that is no longer forgiving. After interviewing dozens of CHROs, CEOs, and policy voices, one truth resurfaced, India has entered the age of caution, changing how organisations think, hire, lead, and grow.
