The global impact of BJP’s win in West Bengal

The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to India, beginning from Kolkata, has an eerie similarity to the visit of a previous Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2012.

The global impact of BJP’s win in West Bengal

Both of them visited West Bengal when the state has been undergoing major political changes - in 2011 from left to Trinamool, and in 2026 from Trinamool to BJP. Both of them showed their respect, apparently, to Mother Teresa; but observers find much deeper social and political reasons.

The political turmoils in West Bengal have never been free from suspicions about international interference. Some look at it positively, hoping for increased foreign investment in the state. But such hopes seldom materialise. It didn’t after 2011; we are yet to see after this year’s change. Others interpret the visit gloomily, earlier to see the end of communism and presently the fate of a so-called movement of an eastern fragmentation of India. Hasina saw American ‘hand’ in her ouster; and India suspecting a move to separate ‘west’ Bengal from the mainland. Many see the desperation of BJP of winning West Bengal, connected to these delinking efforts within and around the state. America has an eye over India’s “Look East” policy; and so, has China.
