While we take pride in India’s remarkable progress in the world, we often tend to forget to look inwards.
What do our social indicators reveal? India takes the baton from Indonesia to hold the next G20 summit; but we cannot forget our 102nd position in the World Hunger Index, 130th position in the UN Human Development Index and our lowly places in the World Poverty and Inequality Indexes.
On the 75th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, the Prime Minister has pledged that the next 25 years will be an ‘amrit mahotshav’. India will be transformed into a ‘developed’ nation. It is good to be ambitious. But let us analyse the reality a bit.

Rupee has weakened
The rupee has weakened significantly over the past year, falling from 84.7 to 89.7 against the US dollar. Its depreciation has been even sharper against the euro (9.4 per cent) and the British pound (14.3 per cent). It has also lost value against the Japanese yen and the Chinese yuan. In nominal terms, therefore, the rupee has depreciated against all major global currencies.
