DANIEL PUND

IT'S A FAMILY AFFAIR CREATING A TREASURE CHEST OF LOVED ONES.

FAMILY HAS BEEN MUCH on my mind lately. I spend the majority of my time with my nuclear family and a crazy-eyed, 14-week-old puppy who performs improbably high vertical leaps for no apparent reason. I spent two weeks in Northern California, first with my Road & Track reader family at the amazing Seaside to Sierra road rally, crossing the state from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe, and then at my work-family reunion called Performance Car of the Year testing. Look for the latter story in our next issue.

I arrived home to find that deputy creative director Cassidy Zobl had been conspiring with star photographer Ian Allen and creative director Nathan Schroeder to create the cover image you see here. This being the Family issue, it seemed appropriate to visually explore the connection between family and cars. To illustrate this, Zobl solicited staff, contributors, and friends for snapshots representing what the family/car connection looks like on a personal level.

CHASING THE DRAGON

In this job I take a lot of great road trips in a lot of great cars, but I never got to drive the Porsche 918 Spyder in 2013 when it was new.

THE CARS

Welcome to the 2026 Road & Track Performance Car of the Year. I am delighted to bring you the following work of a select team of pros at R&T. The coverage of this year's PCOTY spread out over the next 28 pages is the result of nearly a year of planning, a week of long but glorious days, and a not inconsiderable amount of money. That said, before you flip furiously to the final page of this presentation to see what won, or head to roadandtrack.com to watch the Performance Car of the Year video and read the myriad other stories about these nine cars, I ask that you hear me out on a couple of provisos.

MULTICAR CRASHES ARE NASCAR'S SPECIALTY.

There’s nothing in racing more brutal, or more shamefully entertaining, than a field-clearing wreck at a NASCAR oval. The recipe for disaster is simple: Start a race with a large field of cars, then run them at breakneck speeds with little breathing room. Voilà, vehicular mayhem.
