RECORDS FALL AT RÉTRO FEAST

A fourth auction during this year’s Rétromobile week made for an especially busy schedule in Paris.

Following its ousting as official auction partner of the show, Artcurial went first on 27 January, and was as amusing as ever in a Keystone Cops sort of way, with three rostrum musketeers firing in random directions, in the new but casual-observer-unfriendly venue of The Peninsula Paris. The room notably thinned out after the sale of a remarkably original, barn-find Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing (€4.2m, but touch it and its value tumbles), leading to a graveyard towards the end of the catalogue, although there was a record struck with the sale of a €95,360 1968 Renault 4 Plein Air. A 55% success rate of 34 cars sold from 62 offered led to a sale total of €14,802,199 (£12,852,750).
