The Compass Goes Mainstream

Is a hardcore 4x4 set-up absolutely necessary for a Jeep Compass? We tested the 4x2 diesel-automatic set-up to find that out

WHEN IT COMES TO THE JEEP Compass, it’s a name, like most Jeep models, that built a great reputation for itself owing to its capability to get down and dirty without any hassle thanks to its impressive 4x4 set-up.

But such hardcore 4x4 hardware is not everybody’s cup of tea; many of them prefer a more civilised, mainstream Jeep Compass. Fortunately, there is a 4x2 option but it comes with a catch. You could get it only in the diesel-manual combination and those wanting that extra bit of convenience through an automatic gearbox had to spend extra for the diesel 4x4 set-up. Until now.

Jeep have finally given the 4x2 diesel set-up an automatic option which further expands the horizons for this sport utility vehicle (SUV). Is this what is required to make the Compass truly mainstream while still being able to enjoy what makes it a compelling SUV without sacrificing many of the good bits? We spent a fair amount of time behind its wheel to find that out.
