While Aston Martin and Bentley make the most of their remaining tanks of petrol, Britain's poshest marque is whispering its way into the plug-in future. Over to our man in California...

Ghost-lusters

This isn't a car that requires a review. Rolls-Royce customers do not concern themselves with the views of the unwashed proletariat. If they did, they'd have waited to hear what it's like, instead of already ordering so many it's sold out until the middle of 2025.

The car is the Rolls-Royce Spectre, and it's not just the first fully electric product of the modern Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd which BMW seeded in 1998. Since Charles met Henry 119 years ago, no production spec car in their marque's potted history has been battery powered.

Occasionally, Rolls-Royce itself likes to pay attention to journalists. In 1907, a writer in Britain's The Autocar declared the underwhelmingly named 40/50hp model was "the best car in the world". Granted, he only had about three to choose from back then, but Rolls was only too happy to adopt that verdict as the company's semi-official slogan, emblazoning it prominently on its marketing materials for most of the ensuing century.

Claude Johnson, the cofounder who styled himself as the hyphen in Rolls-Royce, also saw the value in pinching a hack's nickname for his marketing car, which was decorated with aluminium-coloured paint and polished brightwork. That's how the 40/50hp became the Silver Ghost. So, the latest Rolls named after a supernatural apparition might not need validation, but you never know. Could come in useful...

RICCI'S PLAN TO SELL THE PAJERO IS IN TATTERS AFTER ITS PAINTJOB

A few months back I shared an unusually sensible plan of tidying up my Pajero Evolution with the goal of selling it to help finish the R34 GT-R restoration. This was approved by Steve @ SR Autobodies who agreed to pause progress until it was sold, resulting in a rare moment of automotive zen. For one car must be sacrificed in order to revive another.

Q: IS IRACING'S DOMINANCE UNDER THREAT?

If you know anything about sim racing, you'll be aware of iRacing. It's the thing Max Verstappen does when he's supposed to be getting a tight eight hours of sleep ahead of a Grand Prix. It's also the most popular online sim racing service, with hundreds of thousands of active users. Nothing else compares to it in terms of fair and competitive online racing, and if you want to experience the thrill of being a professional racing driver but your dad didn't own a petrochemicals company, iRacing is the closest you'll get.

“THE LIGHTEST BENTLEY FOR 85 YEARS... I'LL LET THAT ONE SINK IN"

Only the fourth model in Bentley's history to wear the Supersports badge is by far the biggest swing of the bat. 'Super Sports' v1.0 arrived exactly 100 years ago, was the first Bentley capable of 100mph and only 18 were ever built. The next came in 2009 - the pinnacle of the first gen Conti GT range two seats, 100kg lighter and capable of 204mph. In 2017 the second gen Conti GT got a Supersports too with a 700bhp version of the burly old 6.0-litre twin turbo W12, making it the most powerful Bentley ever at the time.

Two recent startups offer hope for Jaguar, says Jethro

Imagine starting a car company from zero. A real car company. One that wants to sell in volume and must adhere to all the rules and regulations that apply to Ford or Toyota. One that satisfies a market that demands reliability, convenience and a level of all round capability that was unheard of just a decade or so ago. The task list is laughably complex. From creating a brand that resonates with a broad audience, to engineering a product to exceed incumbent class leaders and ultimately to market and sell in a ferociously competitive space. Oh, and maybe try to make some money too.

Lando Norris is as honest as champions come, says Natalie

There is something wonderfully poetic about Lando Norris securing his maiden F1 world title. Not just because of the speed, the statistics, or the storylines but because of the spirit and authenticity behind it all.
