NEXT-GEN CLA IN RECORDBREAKING 24-HOUR EV RUN

Mercedes-Benz has set a new 24-hour distance record for electric cars during testing of its third-generation CLA, with an estimated efficiency of over 5.0 miles per kWh. Using learnings from the sleek Mercedes Vision EQXX engineering concept of 2022, a prototype of the new electric saloon covered a distance of 2309.6 miles within a single day at the Nardò test track in Italy.

The record was previously held by the Porsche Taycan, which ran for 2128.2 miles around the same banked oval back in 2019. Based on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), the Mk3 CLA is the first of four new compact EVs that the German manufacturer plans to launch by the end of 2026, including successors to the CLA Shooting Brake and EQA and EQB crossovers. All four models feature a newly developed 800V electrical architecture (the first to be used by a series-production Mercedes) in combination with new-generation electric motors and heat pumps and the new all-encompassing Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS).

HOW PORSCHE IS PURSUING A QUIETER LIFE FOR OWNERS

NOISE, VIBRATION AND HARSHNESS (NVH) are three of the most important words in the engineering of new cars. They describe exactly that: noise and vibration generated from hundreds of sources, from the texture and undulation of the road surface to the entire drivetrain, tyres, brakes and structure of the car itself.

Max Verstappen was the standout Formula 1 driver of 2025 for me. That's not to denigrate new world champion Lando Norris in any way. In fact, I would argue the opposite is the case. That Norris prevailed in the tense Abu Dhabi finale does him huge credit because, as he will know only too well while reflecting on his hallowed new status, he did so in the face of an astonishing fightback from one of the true greats of motor racing.
