End to EV Congestion Charge exemption set to raise £75m

AEX PROPOSED changes to the London Congestion Charge are set to raise tens of millions of pounds a year, with drivers of electric vehicles set to bear the biggest burden.

An Auto Express Freedom of Information request submitted to Transport for London (TfL) revealed that removing the EV exemption to the Congestion Charge is expected to generate as much as £75million a year - or even more if the proposed changes to the Cleaner Vehicle Discount (CVD) aren't implemented.

The suggested plan means that although EVs will be subject to the Congestion Charge from 2 January 2026, they will receive a 25 per cent discount (rising to 50 per cent for vans and other LCVs) if registered through the TfL Auto Pay system.
