CASHING IN HAVE MOTO BECOME AN EASY TARGE

THE VAST MAJORITY OF AUTO EXPRESS READERS FEEL THAT MOTORISTS ARE BEING TREATED UNFAIRLY WHEN IT COMES TO ADDITIONAL ROAD TOLLS AND CHARGES
MOTORISTS are being unfairly targeted by local authorities - that's the overwhelming opinion of Auto Express readers following a recent survey, which comes just as Oxfordshire County Council launches aconsultation into plans for anew congestion-charge zone in Oxford.
The public consultation, which is set to run for six weeks, centres around a proposed C-charge zone - much like the one in London - that would be introduced in the autumn and see motorists have to pay a £5 daily charge to enter.
Local residents would be granted 100 free day passes per year, while those living in the wider Oxford area can apply for 25 free day passes annually. Permits for people such as care workers, Blue Badge holders and mobile traders mean they will also be able to avoid the charge.
Officials at Oxfordshire County Council say the main reason behind the proposed scheme is to reduce congestion, which is currently being caused by the closure of Botley Road, the main route into the city centre.
Oxfordshire councillor and portfolio holder for transport, Andrew Gant, said: “We believe the proposed temporary congestion charge could have a significant positive impact on people's travel in and around the city by strengthening local bus services and reducing overall traffic.”
But a council spokesperson did admit to Auto Express that while “there are significant uncertainties in the income forecast, net income after operating costs could total £3.5-4million per year”.
