The Street: Reimagining Community Living in Pune

The Street by Studio VDGA is a community house in Pune, India where exposed local red brick and raw concrete form the primary palette.

The project reinterprets the spirit of Indian by-lanes through a meandering, open plan layout, fostering everyday social interaction and reviving the collective life of a plotted residential neighbourhood.

In a time when urban living is increasingly defined by isolation behind compound walls, The Street offers a thoughtful alternative. Conceived as a community house for a plotted residential development of modest 1500 square foot homes on the outskirts of Pune, the project responds to a growing reality. As land prices push families toward the city's fringes, the intimate social fabric of traditional neighbourhoods often dissolves. The Street sets out to reclaim that lost sense of togetherness by creating a shared space rooted in the everyday rituals of Indian life.

Rather than functioning as a conventional clubhouse or a checklist of amenities, The Street is imagined as an extension of the neighbourhood itself. It is a place where daily routines overlap with moments of leisure and celebration, where movement feels informal and encounters happen naturally.
