Embracing the natural beauty of the Himalayas, the Himachal Pradesh Technical University in Hamirpur is a shining example of responsive and site-sensitive architecture. Designed by Architect Sangeet Sharma of SSDA, the campus is a masterful blend of tradition, modernity, and sustainability

A CAMPUS IN SYNC WITH NATURE

When approached with the design solution for Himachal Pradesh Technical University, Hamirpur, Architect Sangeet Sharma of SSDA adopted a deliberate approach, to derive inspiration from the site’s topographical nuances and contextual specificities and hence establishing a responsive and site-sensitive architectural approach. Nestled amidst the picturesque hills of Himachal Pradesh, the Hamirpur campus is a testament to harmonious coexistence with nature. Spanning 320 acres of lush greenery, the university's architecture seamlessly blends into the rugged terrain, embracing the majestic pine trees that surround it. Inspired by the region’s unique Himalayan style, the campus features a thoughtful integration of natural materials, reflecting a perfect balance between tradition and modernity.

This thoughtful approach is reflected in the campus’s design, where nature and architecture converge to create a unique learning environment. “Hamirpur’s pleasant climate played a pivotal role in our planning process, allowing us to create a campus that not only coexists with nature but thrives because of it. We prioritized open green spaces, crafting microclimes that bring comfort, vistas for cross ventilation, and serene landscapes. In fact, we took it a step further by creating a mini forest zone on the southwest direction, fostering biodiversity and amplifying the microclimatic effect,” informs architect Sangeet Sharma.
